Reflect on these questions online; print this page; or highlight, copy, paste, and save the text to
work in a word document.
1. Look through a session in your Leader Guide.
- Is there more focus on what the teacher will do and say or on how the children participate?
- In the margins of each activity note if it focuses on developing knowledge, skill, or understanding.
- Is it easy to tell what children will learn from each activity? Do you think the activity will accomplish what it sets
out to do?
- How does the guide present the role of the teacher person with all the answers, coach, or facilitator?
2. Look at the six types of understandings. Which types can the kids you work with accomplish?
3. Create a list of activity words or activities that help children in your age group gain knowledge.
4. What skills are developed in your Sunday school sessions (in your class and any experiences with other classes)? Some
categories to think about are worship, stewardship, hospitality, and prayer.
5. Develop a set of "First Aid Cards" to use when your original plan is not working. Write big picture questions that fit
your children, your yearly learning goal, or your congregation. Try these:
- Can you name all the places that have water in our church building?
If someone names the baptismal font, you can talk
about watching or participating in baptisms.
- What were you doing the last time you were in the church building other than for Sunday school?
A variety of topics
may arise and you have a ready-made chance to talk about all the positive ministries that are a part of the life of the church.
- Who is the oldest or youngest person you know in our church?
- What would be the best way to use our offering gifts?
